Choosing your hose diameter

The next thing to think about when buying a hose is the diameter.
8mm
  • Ideal for small gardens, patios and courtyards
  • Lightweight and easy to move around the garden
  • Lower flow rate than a 12mm hose
12mm
  • Most common size for residential gardens
  • Good water flow without being too heavy
  • Extensive range of fittings, hand sprays and reels
18mm
  • More than double the flow rate of a 12mm hose
  • Heavier and harder to move around
  • Limited range of fittings

Choosing the right hose length

Measure the distance from the tap to how far you want to water. Bear in mind longer hoses cost more, are heavier to move around and need more storage space.

Care for your hose in six simple steps

1
Unroll and lay your hose flat to prevent kinks
Roll out your new hose and leave flat out in the sun for a couple of days. This will assist to release the ‘memory’ after being coiled, reduce annoying kinks and make the hose easier to manage.
2
Keep it on a hose reel or cart to avoid tripping
Avoid tangles, trips and mess with a garden hose reel or cart. It’s the best way to keep your hose neat, tidy and ready for watering.
3
Turn the water off at the tap after use
Over longer periods of time the water pressure can stress the hose and lead to ruptures, wasting water and damaging your garden. Always turn off the tap and store your hose away after each use.
4
Use a hand spray or nozzle for smarter watering
Attach a hand spray to your hose for easy and efficient watering and cleaning, from a soft shower to a strong jet. Most hand sprays will connect to started 12mm hose fittings, or use an adaptor for 18m fittings.
5
Keep it out of the sun
Harsh UV rays can damage and crack the exterior layers of the hose, leading to ruptures. Any water remaining in the hose can also heat to high temperatures and cause damage to the interior.
6
Flush your hose until the water runs cool
On warm days, or if your hose has been out in the sun, always remember to run water through the hose away from your plants until it runs cool. Hot water can scald and damage your plants.
